The nineteenth century transition into modernity in East Asia was characterized by a complex relationship between intrinsic and foreign factors that saw the decentering of China and the ascendance of Western and Western-styled Imperialist regimes. The passing of the Qianlong Emperor (1711-1796) in China demarcated a shift in power the saw the demise of Chinese regional power and the separation of faithful Tributary vassals such as the Chosun Kingdom of Korea, which broke from the Tributary system in 1897, and the Nguyễn Dynasty of Vietnam was absorbed by the French Colonial Empire.
