Volume 4 : Early Modern Asia (1500 to 1800)

Edited by Mio Kishimoto and Yasushi Oki

The sixteenth century was a turbulent age in East Asia. Booming maritime trade threatened the survival of individuals and governments that failed to adapt. While trade was a significant factor, chronic warfare, especially along the periphery of the Ming empire (1368 CE-1644 CE), precipitated further challenges to state and society. This volume will examine common problems, and different solutions, experienced as China, Japan and Korea developed their respective cultural identities through rivalries and interchanges during the early modern age.
