Volume 3 : Medieval East Asia (900 to 1500)

Edited by Masaaki Itakura and Takahiro Nakajima

The transition from the Tang dynasty (618 CE – 906 CE) to Song dynasty (960 CE – 1279 CE) is regarded as one of the most significant shifts in the social imaginary of East Asia. China`s booming market system enabled a dynamic premodern East Asian economic trade zone. By the end of the Yuan dynasty (1279 CE – 1368 CE), East Asia was intricately linked to global market systems as the more developed economic trading partner with the West.
